What to Expect During the Roofing Process

You’ve determined that it’s time for a new roof and you’re wondering about the roofing process. You’ve contacted Achten’s Quality Roofing and accepted a proposal based on our excellent reviews. Once the deposit is made, our production manager will be in contact to go over what to expect during the roofing process.

To help, we’ve put together this guide to help explain what to expect and what you can do to help it progress smoothly.

Getting Started

At the beginning of the process, you can expect to have a conversation with your estimator about material and your vision. Our expert estimators can help you with choosing the roofing system that fits your needs. We offer a wide range of products and roofing types to fit your vision and budget.

Our team here at Achten’s works with many manufacturers including GAF, IKO, Owens Corning, Nu-Ray, CertainTeed, and Polyglass. We specialize in residential roofing but also offer commercial roofing. We roof a wide variety of projects including apartment and condo buildings, rental homes, and commercial flat roofing on restaurants, and shopping centers.

Prepping for Your New Roof

It’s important to remember that during the roofing process your home is essentially a construction zone with lots of noise and activity going on. Here are some ways you can prepare for the roofing process:

  • Be prepared to move vehicles if necessary. We will need full access to the driveway while we are working. We will remove our trailer at the end of the workday and thoroughly clean the driveway so you can park your vehicle there at night.
  • Take steps to protect your garden and lawn ornaments. We may lay down tarps to catch any roofing debris that may fall from the roof to protect shrubs, plants, or and other landscaping.
  • Roofing can be loud. It’s courteous to let neighbors know that you’ll be having your roof redone so they can prepare for the noise. If you’re a business, it may be a good idea to inform customers about noise or even close temporarily until roofing is complete.
  • Along with possibly disturbing your neighbors, ongoing roofing can disrupt things in your own home. If you have small children who nap, consider finding a place with friends or family where they (and you) can escape the noise. Also consider how the noise will affect your own patterns, especially if you work from home.
  • People will be walking and hammering on your roof for at least a few days. It’s advisable to put a tarp over valuables in the attic to protect them from dust and debris that may come loose.

These are practical steps to take to prepare yourself and your neighbors. Here are a few things to know about from our end.

  • Throughout the roofing process material like shingles or plywood may be transported and stored on-site.
  • Typically, we’ll put a tarp on nearby shrubbery to keep debris out and make clean-up easier.
  • A dumpster will be brought on-site at some point. This gives us somewhere to dispose of old material and keep the site as organized and clean as possible.

What to Expect During the Roofing Process?

Safety is a top priority while work is ongoing. Make sure that pets and small children are kept away from the worksite to keep them safe.

Besides safety, a crucial thing to keep in mind is that not everything will go to plan. Every roof is different. Therefore, during the process, we might discover damages or obstacles that can change our original plan or extend the timeline.

For example, if we discover your decking is rotten, we’ll need to replace it before proceeding. Leaving compromised plywood risks the integrity of the entire roof and will cause more issues (and expenses) down the road.

It’s important to anticipate these bumps in the road and be flexible. If an issue arises, we’ll coordinate with you directly and let you know what is going on with your roof. We will always keep you up-to-date on any changes going on with your project. We want our customers to feel confident and informed during the roofing process.

After the Roofing Process

After we’ve put on your new roof, we’ll do a thorough clean-up of debris and a final scan for nails in your yard using a large magnetic tool. We’ll pick up the dumpster in a timely manner, no longer than a few days. You can expect the foreman to do a final walk-through once the job is done. Chris, our production manager, will contact you to go over any concerns.

This is your time to evaluate the work that we’ve done and ensure it’s what you anticipated. Customer satisfaction is our main priority here at Achten’s Quality Roofing.
