Why Roof Pitch Is Important in Selecting Roofing Material

Roofing

Your choice of roofing material should not only be based only on aesthetics and price. If you want to ensure your roof’s maximum performance, roof pitch is an important factor that you should take into account.

Why Roof Pitch Is Important in Selecting Roofing Material

Achten’s Quality Roofing, a family-owned and operated roof contractor, shares more information about roof pitch and why it’s crucial for a long-lasting roofing system.

The Importance of Roof Pitch

Roof pitch refers to the angle, slant or slope of a roof. It is represented by two numbers that indicate a ratio — for example, 5/12 or 5:12.

These numbers — the numerator (the top number) and the denominator (the bottom) — denote specific measurements. The numerator refers to the height or vertical measurement of the roof, while the denominator refers to the length or horizontal measurement of the roof. Together, they make up the roof pitch.

Experts refer to the roof pitch when they install or replace roof systems since it determines how a roofing material will perform in the long run. For instance, it can give you an idea of how quickly water and debris will shed from your roof.

Recommended Pitch Ranges for Different Roofing Materials

Specific pitch ranges require particular types of roofing material. For roof pitches with lower angles, specifically the .25/12 to 3/12 pitch range, these roofing materials are your best options:

  • Built-up roofing (BUR) or tar-and-gravel
  • Torch-down roofing
  • Rubber membrane
  • Standing seam metal

For the 2.5/12 to 19/12 pitch range, clay or cement tiles are recommended. Asphalt (composite) shingles are best for roofs with pitches ranging from 4/12 to 20/12. Wood and slate shingles are typically used for roofs with 5/12 to 12/12 pitches.
